The Bharat Scouts & Guides is the national scouting and guiding association of India. The national headquarters of BS&G is recognized by the government of India. Scouting was founded in India in 1909 as an overseas branch of this scout association and became a member of world organization of the scout movement in 1938. Guiding in India started in 1911 and was amongst the founder members of world association of girl guides and girl scouts in 1928, also covering present-day Bangladesh and Pakistan at that time. The BS&G serves 2,886,460 scouts (as of 2011) and 1,286,161 Guides (as of 2005). Scouting and guiding is an international movement to inculcate a spirit of loyalty, patriotism & thoughtfulness for others in the young boys and girls. Ministry of youth affairs and sports provides assistance for promotion of scouting and guiding all across the country.
The ROVER/RANGER motto is simply “SERVICE”, and it is put into practice both in the group and the community All BPSA section leaders are required to be registered as rovers/rangers to provide them with more solid background in scouting.
The purpose of the movement is to contribute to the development of young people in achieving their full physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual potentials as individuals, as responsible citizens and as members of local, national and international communities. The scout/guide movement is based on the principles of Duty to god, Duty to others and Duty to self.
The overriding goal of the scouting and guiding movements is to help develop the young people in local communities. This goal is reflected in the official statement of purpose of the guides and mission statement of the scouts. There are many areas of young people’s lives where the scout and guide movements can have a positive effect. Both groups strive to develop their members emotionally, socially, mentally /intellectually, physically and spiritually so that they can make a positive contribution to their communities and the wider world.
It was established in 1914, when Rustomji Edulji Sethna (1898-1954) came across the book scouting for boys, written by Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of scout movement. He was enamored by the book and found one of the India’s first scout groups for native boys.
