Inception and Growth

The Department of Faculty of Arts was established in the year 2011. The Department offers two BA programmes: 1) A combination of Mass Communication & Journalism, Economics and Political Science, 2) A combination of Mass Communication & Journalism, Economics and Psychology as core courses with a sanctioned strength of 60 students per programme. The department has an industry standard Mass Communication studio, an editing suite and a psychology lab. The Department provide students with hands-on experience and the skills needed to work in the industry. Many students of the department participate enthusiastically in various events of the college and also in those organized by several other colleges and institutions across the country. They have also won recognition and appreciation for their talents at many such events. Field Visits, Industry visits, attending talks and seminars is the strength of the department. The Department of Faculty of Arts produces the college's quarterly newsletter and a quarterly news bulletin which are the best practices.

The department of Economics, Faculty of Arts in association with Bhavan's Institution Innovation Council organised a guest lecture on " Understanding the National Education Policy:Empowering the Future" On 30/07/24 in romm no 208, Seminar Hall, MBA. The resource person for the guest lecture was Dr. S V Ramana Rao Director, Siva Sivani Institute of Management, Hyderabad.The event aimed to provide students and faculty with a deeper understanding of the recent changes in India’s educational framework and their implications.

Workshop

The Department of Psychology, Faculty of Arts organized a worshop on 19 July 2024, in room number 71, Bio chemistry block , from 2:30 pm onwards. The topic for the workshop was 'Blended Balance: Combining Techniques For Optimal Mental Health'. The speakers for the event were Ayushi Shah- Psychotherapist and Shravni J- Mental Health Practitioner. The event was aimed at introducing students of psychology to different methods of therapy, namely art therapy, Movement based therapy and also to help them cope with stress.

Debate Competition

The Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts organized a debate competition on 18 July 2024, in room number 71, Bio chemistry block. The topic for the competition was 'Population growth -A threat to sustainable development or a catalyst for innovation'. The faculty coordinators were Dr.Seema Ghosh, HOD, Department of Economics and K.Venkata Priya, Lecturer in Economics, The judges for the event were Dr.Y.Madhuri Srinivas, Assistant professor in Management studies and Mrs.Jyoti Mehra, Assistant professor in Commerce. A total of 7 teams participated in the debate and were given 6 mins each to present their views. Sadhbhavana and Abhilaya stood first in the competition, Gayatri and Prakruthi stood second. The event aimed to stimulate critical thinking among students on the complex relationship between population dynamics and sustainable development. The debate successfully engaged students in a meaningful discussion on a pivotal global issue. It highlighted the complexity of the population-growth dynamic and the need for innovative, sustainable solutions.

5 day Induction Program

Dr. GSVRK Choudhary and Swami Bodhamayanandaji spoke at the induction for the first year students. The first year students were addressed by the Secunderabad Police on Cyber Safety and Security along with SHE Team. Mrs. Seema Ghosh Head of Department, Arts and Mr. Shiva Thrishul, Faculty of Arts introduced departments and advised on college life. Ms. Yashaswi Dinawahi, L & D Specialist at Uber, lectured on psychological awareness. Mrs. Laxmi, Department of Languages organized literary activities. Alumni Ms. Teresa, Project Manager, Techolution and Mr. Melvin George AI/ML Analyst, Apple.Inc shared career insights. Seniors guided first-years and gave a campus tour. The induction program concluded, setting the stage for college life at Bhavan’s Vivekananda College.

Outreach Program

On February 17th, 2024, the Faculty of Arts organized an outreach program at ZPHS Kowkoor aimed at engaging 8th and 9th-grade students. The event featured two engaging competitions: a Painting/Drawing competition centered around the theme of 'Water Wastage and Water Management Techniques', and an Essay Writing competition focused on 'Women Empowerment: The role of women in society'. With a total of 50 enthusiastic participants, the event provided a platform for students to showcase their creativity and express their thoughts on important social issues. Following a spirited display of talent and ideas, prizes were awarded to the deserving winners, marking a successful and enriching endeavour in promoting awareness and fostering intellectual growth among the students. Guest Lecture on “Budgetonomics”

On February 12, 2024, Department of Economics, Faculty of Arts, Bhavan's Vivekananda College had the honour of hosting Baba Kishore Mutta, the esteemed Founder and CEO of Ealkay, a prominent figure in the financial sector. The event was organized by the faculty of Economics and HOD Seema Ma'am provide valuable insights into budget management to its students.Baba Kishore Mutta is renowned for his expertise in finance and business management. As the founder and CEO of Ealkay, he has played a pivotal role in shaping the financial landscape. His vast experience and insightful perspectives make him a sought-after speaker in various educational institutions and industryforums. The guest lecture commenced with an introduction to the significance of budgeting in personal and professional life. Baba Kishore Mutta emphasized the importance of financial planning and disciplined budgeting for achieving long-term financial goals. Throughout the lecture, he shared examples from his entrepreneurial journey, illustrating the challenges and rewards of budget management. He elucidated the principles of effective budgeting, highlighting the need for prioritization, tracking expenses, and adapting to changing circumstances. Baba Kishore Mutta also spoke of budget allocation in businesses, discussing strategies for optimizing resources and maximizing returns. His insights on leveraging technology for financial planning resonated with the audience, particularly the college students The session concluded with an engaging Q&A segment, where students had the opportunity to seek clarification and held 4 students from different backgrounds representing Poor, Woman,Middle-class,youth and spoke from their perspective of budget. The guest lecture by Baba Kishore Mutta proved to be a valuable learning experience for the students of Bhavan's Vivekananda College. His insightful discourse on budget management provided them with practical knowledge and inspiration to navigate the financial landscape with confidence. The event served as a testament to the college's commitment to providing holistic education and grooming future leaders in various fields.

Film Screening and Discussion

The Department of Mass Communication, Bhavan’s Vivekananda College organized a film screening and discussion event in the Mass Communication lab, in room number 405 MBA Block at 1 p.m. on 31st January 2024. The event witnessed the presence of Mr. Shawn Sebastian, director, ‘Faces of Climate Resilience’. The documentary was screened and was followed by an open discussion with Mr. Shawn During the session, Mr. Shawn shared his insights on the filming process of his documentary, mentioning the places he visited and the voice of its people.

Visit to Hyderabad Literature Festival

On January 26th, 2024, approximately 15 students and staff from the Department of BA attended the Hyderabad Literary Festival at Sattva Knowledge City in Hi-Tec City. The students immersed themselves in a diverse range of literary discussions, workshops, and cultural performances, engaging with renowned authors and scholars to deepen their understanding of literature's societal impact and cultural significance. The festival provided a platform for students to explore various literary genres and contemporary issues while fostering dialogue with peers and industry professionals. Additionally, attendees embraced the vibrant cultural atmosphere, indulging in art exhibitions, culinary delights, and performances, which enriched the overall experience. This visit not only nurtured a deeper appreciation for literature but also encouraged active participation in broader societal discourse, contributing significantly to the academic and personal growth of all involved.

Walk to Empowher

On January 21, 2024, the students of the Bachelor of Arts program participated in a spirited walk organized by Child Rights and You (CRY) to champion the cause of the girl child. The event unfolded with enthusiasm and purpose, starting at entry point of Necklace road, weaving through entire path, and concluding at Jal Vihar. Clad in symbolic colors that resonated with the cause, the participants, including students and faculty members, embarked on a journey to raise awareness about the challenges faced by the girl child, particularly in areas such as education, health, and societal prejudices. The chief guests for the event were Ms. Shikha Goel, IPS and Ms. Shravya Varma, Designer. The walk not only succeeded in engaging the immediate community but also caught the attention of local media, amplifying its impact and bringing the crucial issues faced by the girl child into the public discourse.. The BA students played a pivotal role in making the event impactful, distributing informative pamphlets and actively participating in community outreach. The walk, orchestrated by CRY, served as a catalyst for discussions on the role each individual can play in promoting the rights of the girl child.

Workshop

On December 21, 2023, the Faculty ofArts at Bhavans Vivekananda College organised a workshop for BAfinal-year students. Mr. Santosh Kumar Putta, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, Osmania University, Hyderabad was the guest speaker.The workshop was divided into four sessions. Each session focused on different aspects of research design, covering topics such as formulating research questions, selecting appropriate methodologies, data collection techniques, and ethical considerations. It was a comprehensive and engaging series of sessions that provided valuable insights into the world of research design. Mr. Putta delved into the intricacies of research design, emphasizing its crucial role in conducting effective and reliable studies. He shed light on various aspects, including the selection of appropriate methodologies, data collection techniques, and the formulation. Session 1 of the workshop focused on the introduction and process of research design, as well as formulating research questions and hypotheses. During this session, Mr. Putta discussed the qualities of research, different methods of inquiry, and the research procedure which consists of 8 steps. He emphasized the importance of selecting a problem and, if necessary, replicating previous research. Session 2 of the workshop discussed different types of research, research design, and the process involved. The students also participated in a survey on 'social media use and sleep quality’. In Session 3, the speaker discussed different types of research design, research questions and hypotheses, case studies, primary and secondary data, and questionnaire design. It was a comprehensive session that covered a lot of important aspects of research. Session 4, covered statistics, data analysis (both quantitative and qualitative), graphical presentation of data, and hypothesis testing. To illustrate the practical application of research design, Mr. Putta shared insightful case studies and examples. He showcased how different research designs were employed in real-world scenarios, ranging from social sciences to healthcare and business. The students actively engaged with Mr. Putta, posing questions, and seeking clarification on various aspects of research design.

Value Added Course on Money Management MasterClass

Department of Economics,Facultyof Arts, organizeda Value-added Courseon Personal Finance, ‘Money Management Masterclass’,from 27th November 2023 to 15th December 2023. A total of 47 students of BA final-year students attended the course.The sessions were held for30 hours through Zoom Meet.This was organized by the Head of the Department of Economics and Faculty of Arts, Dr.Seema Ghosh, in association with Rupiko. The instructors were Ms.Kalpagam Uma shankar and Ms.Komal Shivdasini. The main aim of this session was to enlighten the students with knowledge, techniques, and know-how of personal finance. It covered various concepts like expense management, budgeting, debt management, Investment Avenues, and much more. A recap before every session, real-life and fictional examples, key take aways, and assignments helped students to better understand and grasp the concepts. The students were allowed to clarify their doubts and pose questions to the instructors who answered them patiently and interactively. With successful completion of the course, students felt confident to enter their career life, effectively manage their finances, and inculcate good financial habits.

Importance of Internship in Organizational Psychology

On 21th November 2023, Aliza Virani conducted a session on the importance of internship in organizational psychology and spoke about her company NABI. She introduced her upcoming project and proceeded to offer a training program in the field of emotional support volunteer and offered a three-month internship program for the same. The later part of the session consisted of an interactive Question and Answer segment where the students asked questions in order to understand the internship program offered. The session was conducted in the bio chemistry block room no: - 71 and was attended by the 1st and 2nd year psychology students of the college. The event was presided by Ms. Sneha Govind, Faculty, department of Psychology.
