Profile

The Department of Chemistry was set up when the college was established in 1993 with a strength of 40 students and 3 faculty. Courses then offered were B.Sc. MPC (Maths, Physics, Chemistry) and B.Sc. MBC (Microbiology, Botany, Chemistry). The department aims at holistic development of the students by conducting various workshops, Value-added courses, Skill-Enhancement courses, Guest lectures, Field-visits etc. The students are also motivated to pursue higher studies and research in the field through interaction with eminent scientists from various premier institutes in and around the world.
At present, the department offers six courses MiGC(Microbiology, Genetics, Chemistry), MBiC(Microbiology, Biochemistry, Chemistry), BtGC(Biotechnology, Genetics, Chemistry), MNDC (Microbiology, Nutrition, and Dietetics, Chemistry), BtMbC( Biotechnology, Microbiology, Chemistry) and BcNDC(Biochemistry, Nutrition & Dietetics, Chemistry). The department now consists of six faculty members and around 400 students.

FIELD VISIT TO GITAM UNIVERSITY

The Department of Chemistry, Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce, Sainikpuri, organised a visit to the GITAM University on 20th February 2026 for undergraduate students, with the objective of enhancing conceptual understanding and career opportunities after a bachelor Degree in Life Sciences. The visit was efficiently structured by Ms. Prerana Loomba and Ms. D Rajeshwari. A total of 115 students actively engaged in the visit, comprising 75 students from Lifesciences III year and 40 students from Physical Sciences III Year. To commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar, Prof. G. Narahari Sastry delivered a keynote address highlighting the scientist's enduring legacy in Indian research. The visit concluded with a technical tour of the institute’s sophisticated instrumentation Facility. Students gained exposure to advanced platforms, including RT-PCR, Double Distillation Units, 3D Food Printers, Rotatory Vaccum Evaporator, Mass Spectrometer, Flash Chromatography, Rheometer and many more advanced instruments that were essential for research and academics. Overall the visit broadened the minds of the students, motivating them to aim higher and work for the betterment of the country.

E-Poster Comptetion

The Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an e-poster competition with the theme being “Save water awareness”. The competition was held on 20th September, 2025, Room no. 60, Science Block.
The e-poster competition was conducted with e-poster designed by the contestants, themselves. Each contestant beautifully pictured and enlightened on how important water is, and what are the best ways to save and conserve water. The event was coordinated by Dr. Mary Nygi Kurian, Head, Department of Chemistry along with other faculty co-ordinators Ms. D. Rajeshwari and Ms. Prerana Loomba. Ms. Sowmya Tarani and Ms. Shiksha Mishra served as student coordinators, ensuring smooth organization and enthusiastic participation. A total of 25 students took part in the competition. Overall the event was a grand success.

Social Media Challenge – #SaveWater

The Department of Chemistry in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an inspiring event titled “Social Media Challenge – #SaveWater” on 20th September, 2025. The initiative aimed to spread awareness about the importance of conserving water and to encourage students to use social media as a platform for environmental advocacy and positive change.
The event was coordinated by Dr. Mary Nygi Kurian, Head, Department of Chemistry along with other faculty co-ordinators Dr. L. Arunapriya and Dr. Shruthy D. Pattathil. Ms. Sowmya Tarani and Ms. Shiksha Mishra served as student coordinators, ensuring smooth organization and enthusiastic participation. A total of 15 students took part in the challenge, each contributing their creative ideas and strong commitment to promoting the message of water conservation.
