Profile

The Department of Mathematics started with the inception of the college in 1993, with one lecturer and three undergraduate courses (Maths-Physics-Chemistry, Maths-Physics-Electronics and Maths-Physics-Computer Science). Statistics was introduced in 1994 with one lecturer and one undergraduate course (Maths, Statistics, Computer Science). After 27 glorious years and the 28th year on, the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, which started with an intake of 60 students, has expanded to an annual intake of nearly 300 students. As on date, the Department has a strength of about 990 students, an increase of 16 times plus, the initial intake.

    Guest Lecture on “Current Trends and Careers in Statistics and Data Science”

    The Department of Mathematics and Statistics organized a guest lecture on “Current Trends and Careers in Statistics and Data Science” on 30 June 2025. The speaker was Prof. R. Vishnuvardhan from Pondicherry University, a well-known expert in statistics. He explained how data science is becoming more important in today’s world and talked about how statistics is used in areas like artificial intelligence, health, finance, e-commerce, climate studies, and social sciences. He also spoke about the latest trends such as machine learning, big data, and cloud computing, and stressed the need for students to learn both statistics and computer skills. Prof. Vishnuvardhan guided students on different career paths like data analyst, statistician, researcher, and roles in government and industry. He encouraged them to take up internships, online courses, and projects to improve their skills. After the talk, students asked questions and got helpful advice. The event was organized by Dr. G.S. Mini and Dr. Peddi Rajini and was appreciated by both students and teachers for being informative and motivating.

    National Statistics Day 2025: Online Statistics Quiz

    The Department of Mathematics and Statistics of Bhavan's Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce, Hyderabad, organized National Statistics Day 2025: Online Statistics Quiz from 25th to 29th June 2025 to commemorate the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, the pioneer of modern statistics in India. This initiative aimed to raise awareness of the significance of statistics in everyday life and various professional domains, with a focus on enhancing statistical literacy among students and encouraging them to explore its wide applications in decision-making, research, business, economics, and data science. Designed to be both educational and engaging, the quiz fostered analytical thinking and data interpretation skills among young learners. A total of 670 students (Male: 207, Female: 463) from across India participated, including representation from Telangana (657), Andhra Pradesh (1), Karnataka (10), and Odisha (1), reflecting the event’s national reach and growing interest in the field of statistics. The event was efficiently coordinated by student volunteers D. Rukminee and D. Rajeswari (both BSc HDS-3), under the guidance of faculty coordinators Dr. G.S.     JAM-Just A Minute on occasion of National Statistics day-2025

    The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities & Commerce organized a JAM (Just A Minute) session on 28th June 2025 as part of the National Statistics Day celebrations to raise awareness about the importance of statistics in socio-economic planning and national development. The event was graced by the Guest of Honour, Dr. K. Suvarchala Rani, and was conducted under the leadership of Dr. G. S. Mini, Head of the Department, and faculty member Mrs.T.Sravani. A total of 22 students from various streams participated with great enthusiasm, each selecting a chit with one of 20 pre-decided topics and speaking impromptu for one minute. The participants demonstrated courage, confidence, and clarity in presenting the relevance of statistics in everyday life. Dr. Suvarchala Rani served as the judge for the session and later addressed the participants, offering valuable tips to enhance their speaking skills and appreciating their efforts. The event, which began at 3:00 PM, concluded at 4:30 PM with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. G. S. Mini and a group photograph to mark the occasion.
