Profile

Department of Commerce, along with the inception of the college, commenced in the year 1993 with one section of B. Com Regular course consisting of 43 students. In a span of twenty-eight years, the department has expanded into seven sections comprising; two sections of B. Com, two sections of B. Com Computer Application, two sections of B. Com Honours and one section of B. Com Honours Business Analytics with a strength of around 1300 students and 26 faculty members. The department also offers PG course (M.Com) and is one of the largest departments in the college. The department aspires to equip the students with the required skills when they graduate or post-graduate and keeps pace with the industry requirements by introducing new courses. The Department offers value added courses to all streams in all years. First year students are enhanced with skills based in accounting like Tally Essentials. Second year students are provided with moral, human and ethical values for a holistic development through Art of Self Management, Art of Living, and Personality Development courses. Final year students are empowered with employability courses like Financial Modelling, Digital Marketing, Digital Transformation, Microsoft Office Specialist courses. Honours Business Analytics students are also provided with internships in Analytical tools. The members of the department are actively involved in research; five members are doctorates, fourteen members are pursuing PhD, nine members have completed M.Phil. and sixteen members are NET/SET qualified. Four members have completed Minor Research Projects funded by UGC. Students are motivated to write research articles and are encouraged to participate in National and International conferences. Performance of the students are outstanding in the fields of education, sports and extra-curricular activities. Majority of the students are successful in their careers and have got admission in eminent Universities for higher education. Close to 45% of the students are placed through campus and those who have entrepreneurial cues have become successful entrepreneurs.

Mrs. Kamala Devi, Head, Department of Commerce has been the resource person for State Level Five Day Faculty Development Program from 29/01/24 to 02/01/2024, organised by Department of Commerce, Keshav memorial Institute of Commerce & Sciences, Hyderabad. She has been the speaker for the topic “Student Centered Teaching Methods & Strategies” on Day1 ie 29/01/2024 . Participants from various colleges gained deeper insights into the topic.

Mrs. R. Sreemathi completed Ph.D from KL University from the Department of Management in Finance on the thesis titled - An Analysis of Financial Performance of Family, Non- Family & PSU run businesses: An evidence from NSE India
Best Presenter Award
Ms Ankita nagra and Mrs Jyoti Mehra received Best Presenter Award at IIMC college Hyderabad on December 1st,2023. They were awarded with a cash prize of Rs. 5000/- for the paper titled, "Policy Roadmap to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2030: G20 Sustainable Climate Action Commitment"

Mastering Data Science And Machine Learning Using Python

The Department of Commerce, specializing in Business Analytics, successfully conducted a value-added course on "Mastering Data Science and Machine Learning using Python" for BCom Hons Business Analytics Sem V students. The course, held online from August 26th to October 9th, 2024, provided students with a comprehensive understanding of Python programming and its applications in the field of data science and machine learning. The course covered essential topics in data science and machine learning, including data manipulation, visualization, and regression/classification models. Interactive sessions and hands-on exercises helped students grasp the concepts. A capstone project applied these skills to real-world data, and final presentations demonstrated their ability to solve complex data-driven problems using Python. This course enhanced students' academic journey by equipping them with valuable skills for the evolving field of data analytics.

Guest Lecture on “Optimization Techniques and Activation Functions- Neural Networks”

The Department of Commerce organised a guest lecture on“Optimization Techniques and Activation Functions – Neural Networks"as part of the Business Forecasting course, for the final year students of BCom. Honors Business Analytics. The resource person, Dr. Rajesh Prabhakar Kaila, is a renowned expert in Machine Learning, Big Data Analytics, Python, R, SAS, PySpark, NLP, Segmentation, Predictive Analytics, Econometrics & Forecasting, SPSS, and Quantitative Financial Modelling. The primary aim of the lecture was to provide a comprehensive overview of neural networks and their applications in the realm of business forecasting. The session encompassed a detailed explanation of the fundamentals of neural networks, their role in forecasting, and a demonstration of their graphical representation. Moreover, students engaged in practical implementation using Google Colab notebook (Python), gaining hands-on experience in building and training neural networks.

National Seminar- “Financial Shenanigans”

The Department of commerce of Bhavan's Vivekananda College of Science, Humanities and Commerce organized The National Seminar on “Financial Shenanigans” in collaboration with Indian Accounting Association, Hyderabad Branch on 13thSeptember, 2024. This seminar was Organized under the able guidance of Dr. G.S.V.R.K Choudhary, Principal, BVC. The chief guest is Professor. V. Appa rao, President, Indian Accounting Association, (IAA) Hyderabad branch. The event began at 2:15 pm and was attended by Researchers, Academicians, students and other delegates on blended mode. The Seminar was conducted to create an awareness of Financial Shenanigans amongst the Participants. This Great Endeavor was initiated by the team IAA. Dr. D. Obul Reddy, Chairman, CMA, Prof. G. Naresh Reddy, Secretary, IAA, Hyderabad Branch. The Session I was addressed by the eminent Resource person as well as Guest of Honor for the day Mr. P. R. Ramesh, Former Chairman, Deloitte, who enlightened the participants by highlighting on the global frauds committed till date with various headlines quoted in news on day-to-day notice. Mr Ramesh has also listed the types of frauds such as management frauds, technical frauds, cybercrimes, etc, which is causing Billion Dollar loss to the Global Economy. He also added that variousregulatories have been introduced to detect as well to mitigate such frauds.
The Guest speaker of Session II of the seminar was Dr. RachappaShette, Associate Professor, IIM- Kozhikode, who delivered valuable insights on the effect of Financial Shenanigans on Financial statements and also its effect on qualitative disclosures. Dr. Rachappa has also highlighted various models to detect Financial Shenanigans along with insights intoresearchable ideas for researchers. Five Day Workshop on Financial Awareness

The Commerce Department of Bhavans Vivekananda College hosted a five-day Workshop on Financial awareness from August 9th to 14th, 2024 to enhance students' financial knowledge and drive them to inculcate responsible financial habits. The workshop engaged 176 students from PG, UG 3rd, and 2nd years, offering deep insights into finance and investment. The workshop featured expert speakers, including Mrs. Padmavati Selvam (SEBI Trainer), Prof. Y. Ramakrishna (Program Head, PGDM Centre Head, IPE Centre for Financial Education), Mr. Rishab Lunia (Co-Founder, Knowise Finance Educator), CA Murali Krishna Gunturu (Principal and Founding Member of Inflexor Ventures), and CA Deepak Ladda, (Chairman, SICASA, Hyderabad, Founder and Partner at Agarwal & Ladda Chartered Accountants). Sessions covered topics like securities markets, investment strategies, modern-day investing, venture capital financing, and insights on 2024-25 Budget. Interactive Q&A sessions and daily feedback ensured continuous improvement. The event was highly successful, providing students with practical financial knowledge, and will now become an annual feature.

Inspire to Aspire

"Inspire to Aspire" program was organized by the Department of Commerce. The speakers for the program were CA Maithili Naga Dhavala, Manager in Audit, Alliant Group India Private Limited Trishalaa R, Consultant, Engagement Financial Advisor practice, Deloitte India, Srinath Upadrasta, Consultant, EY, CA Preksha Jain, Practicing Charted Accountant, Mohamed Khozem Siamwala, Tax Consultant, Deloitte and Rahul Batra, Analyst, Deloitte. The distinguished alumni of the department gave inspiring talks and wisdom-sharing sessions with the incoming first year students. The students found the sessions to be very interesting, informative and engaging.

Bridge Course 2024-25

The Department of Commerce organized “Bridge course”, comprising of 30 Hours from 19th June to 16th July 2024 to enable the students from non-commerce background to familiarize and be versed with various basic terms and terminologies used in commerce subjects. A total number of 22 students (general, computers, honours and HBA) have attended the course and got benfited out of it.

Seminar on "Artificial Intelligence - How to Be a Player and Not a Victim"

A seminar titled "Artificial Intelligence - How to Be a Player and Not a Victim" was conducted by United Network of Professionals (UNP) on 13th June 2024 for the final year students of BCom Hons Business Analytics and BSc Hons Data Science. The seminar featured two distinguished speakers: Dr. Saptarshi Das, co-founder of UNP, and Amar Vajjahala, CEO of UNP.The seminar successfully imparted valuable knowledge on navigating the AI landscape, empowering participants to become proactive players rather than passive victims in the age of AI.
