Department of Languages



Inception and Growth

The Department of Languages has been a part of the college since its inception. The Department started with 3 lecturers, 120 students and 2 second languages - Hindi and Sanskrit. It has grown to 17 lecturers, 3243 students (approx.) and 4 second languages - Hindi, Sanskrit, French and Telugu. It seeks to combine rigorous training in the effective use of English and Second languages with the cultivation of an empathetic and critical literary sensibility. The faculty members of the department engage the students to enable vibrant classroom learning by using a distinct range of pedagogies, which improves cognitive and self-learning abilities of the students. They also extend academic support to the students beyond the classroom. They are actively involved in research activities, book publications, paper publications and presentations at various national and international levels. The department opens up opportunities for the students to study at various universities and enables them to interact with people with various cultural backgrounds at different levels.

Value Added Course

The Felicitation Programme for the Value Added Course on 'Preparation for IELTS' offered by the Department of Languages,was organised at 11:00 a.m. on February 26, 2024 in MBA seminar hall. The programme marked the successful completion of the course offered by the department,acknowledging the achievements of the students. The 30-hr Value Added Course titled ' Preparation for IELTS' was organised by the Department of Languages in collaboration with Amigos Review, in January, 2024. Ms. Annie Christina, faculty of English, commenced the session with a welcome note. The participants of the course, in their feedback, stated that the course was aptly designed to suit their requirements. They said that the sessions of the course were engaging and interactive, instilling confidence in them to aim at a satisfactoryoverall band score in IELTS. The trainers, Ms. Neeta and Ms. Krupa thanked the college and the department for the opportunity of collaboration and conveyed their eagerness towards continued association with the institution. The Head, Department of Languages and the Coordinator,Value Added Course, Dr. Madhuri Mathur expressed delight that the pilot batch of 14 students successfully completed the course. She conveyed hope that the course becomes an annual feature with larger batches of students. She congratulated the course participants and gave away the certificates, wishing them success in their endeavours. The programme concluded with the Vote of Thanks proposed by Ms. S. Usha Rani, faculty of English.

Guest Lecture

Department of Languages conducted a guest lecture titled 'Crafting Compelling Content: Mastering the Digital Lanscape' at 1 pm on 19-2-2024 for the UG students. The resource person for the guest lecture, Ms. DEEPIKA JV, Senior Marketing Manager, Jaitra Wellness Pvt. Ltd. Hyderabad delivered an insightful and thought provoking lecture that enlightened the students on how Coloquial language is helping the Content in the Digital Landscape with many relatable videos.

Guest Lecture

Department of Languages conducted a guest lecture titled 'Gender Representation in Films' at 12:00 noon on 25-1-2024 for the UG students. The resource person for the guest lecture, Dr. Mrudula Lakkaraju, Head, Department of English & Vice Principal, UPGCS, delivered an insightful and thought provoking lecture that sensitised the students to Gender issues, Gender portrayal in films and provided them with a new perspective to Gender with relatable examples from Indian films.

Guest Lecture

A Guest Lecture in Sanskrit was conducted on 22nd December 2023, at 2:30p.m. on the topic 'The Wisdom of Bhagavad Gita’.Prof. Vidyanand Arya,Head, Department of Sanskrit, Osmania University was the speaker for the lecture. He elucidated the fundamental aspects of the Gita, notably the imperative of maintaining equilibrium over one’s mind and senses to transcend materialistic desires, ultimately leading to the attainment of peace.

Guest Lecture

The Department of Languages of Bhavan's Vivekananda College hosted a Guest Lecture centred on the theme of "Literature and Society “on 20th December, at 12:00 noonto 1:00 p.m. in Room no 208, MBA Block. The esteemed speaker, Prof. C. Kaseem, Head of the Telugu Department, Osmania University delivered an enlightening speech to the students who had chosen Telugu as their Second Language.

Folk Songs in Indian Languages

Folk song performance where the rich cultural spectrum of our country was duly presented through melodious performance of the students through the songs of 10 different linguistic regions of our country. They performed in Sanskrit; Marathi ;Tamil; Punjabi; Malayali ; Hindi[ vraj] ; Telugu ; Hindi [ bhojpuri] ; Manipuri ; Bengali. ChatakaChataka Re Chataka in Sanskrit, Apsara Ali in Marathi, Enjaami in Tamil, Kothe di aa mahiya in Punjabi,Monta Re; BhengemorGharererChabi in Bengali, PallivaluBhadravattakam in Malayalam, Tum bin mori in Vrajbhasha, Nanuganatallulara in Telugu, Jug jugjiwasulalanwa in Bhojpuri ThilsemKidang in Manipuri were the songs which are sung in the above mentioned languages.

Cuisine Corners from Different Linguistic areas of India

The Department of languages celebrated BharatiyaBhashaDiwas to commemorate the birth anniversary of the great Tamil poet and Freedom fighter SubramaniaBharati. Several events were conducted to mark the celebration. The Indian linguistic diversity was celebrated through one of the events named Cuisine Corner, wherein 28 undergraduate students from various streams participated by bringing dishes representing states from the North, South, East, West, and Central India. There were 28 dishes in all. The participants were highly encouraged as faculty and students of the college tasted the dishes and appreciated their work.

Street Play

A street play themed ‘Unity in Linguistic Diversity’ was organised as part of the celebrations. 13 students participated in the event – 1 directed the play and 12 of them performed it. The play aimed at acknowledging and paying a tribute to all the Indian languages. The student participants, through 3 different and thought-provoking stories, emphasised the need for staying united despite the linguistic barriers. The performers used Sanskrit, Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, Bengali, Punjabi and Odia amongst other Indian languages in oral form – in their dialogues and written form – in the charts displayed at the end of the play. The street play was an impactful demonstration of the spirit of oneness that unites all Indians.
